Marjoe

this is one of the best docs i've ever seen. it's the true story of a guy named marjoe who starting preaching at age 4. he was a huge success and traveled coast to coast to give sermons at revivals. at age 14 he abandoned this work, then returned a couple years later, became very popular again for another couple years.

he then invited a film crew to document how everything he's preaching (in the film) and has ever preached is total bullshit. he doesn't even believe in god and he's actually a total hippie.

there's lots of footage of revival meetings, people screaming and crying, being saved, speaking in tongues, etc. then there's marjoe counting his money afterwards and revealing his and other preachers tricks to bilking followers out of their cash.

funny thing is, he actually seems like a really nice, fun guy, despite what he's doing. he says in the film that he's making the movie to show people they don't need some fake prophet to 'get off,' that no miracles are actually taking place and that this should be taken as entertainment, not religion.

other motivating factors for the film (his effective exist from the circuit) are the way these saved individuals will change to become intolerant assholes towards those who don't share their religious beliefs, as well as all the 'you're going to hell if you don't do this or that' bs he feels he has to include in his sermones.

"dark days", movie

Near Penn Station, next to the Amtrak tracks, squatters have been living for years. Marc Singer goes underground to live with them, and films this "family." A dozen or so men and one woman talk about their lives: horrors of childhood, jail time, losing children, being coke-heads. They scavenge, they've built themselves sturdy one-room shacks; they have pets, cook, chat, argue, give each other haircuts. A bucket is their toilet. Leaky overhead pipes are a source of water for showers. They live in virtual darkness. During the filming, Amtrak gives a 30-day eviction notice...more

"CBS to Make Internet Music Unit More Like Radio"

I love articles about companies in the music industry developing new services and/or products so they can give customers what they want AND combat illegal downloading, which is clearly ruining the industry (eye roll), and then you get to the "there are limitations: any given song can only be played three times" part where you realize how totally shitty and out of touch they still are.

Alternative Fashion Dance Party

Even though I laughed my ass off the first time I watched this, I'm also kinda into it.

There should be a video here.

There might be some problems with it though, if so you should be able to check it out on this MySpace page.

Avril Lavigne promotes dieting to 12 yr olds

Weight Watchers. Avril Lavigne's website has an ad on it for WEIGHT WATCHERS.

The forum on her fanclub, which is called Crossbonez, has a thread titled 'How Old Are You?' How old are Avril's online fans? Apparently they're anywhere from 12-19, the majority saying they're 13 or 14 yrs old.

How could someone so young use the Weight Watchers program? Weight Watchers is well-known for it's support groups, special food and weigh-ins, all of which a young teen girl could not utilize without some sort of adult complicity. Well, it seems that weight watchers now has an online program, perfect for insecure, body-conscious young girls with internet access. This program promises real results and says it's not a diet, it's about teaching you how to have a healthy relationship with food.

To see this disgusting money-grab go to Avril's site, where it's hard to tell what's an ad and what's content, and view the first WW ad (that's right, there's 3 in total) at the top of the screen, then scroll to the bottom of the page where the second and third WW ad tells you about their virtual program.

She also has a t-shit contest where fans tell her which shirt they like the most, ie which one they're more likely to buy, and the 'winning' shirt will be made and sold at her upcoming tour! Umm good marketing strategy!

Now while I get that 99% of what is 'Avril' is all marketing and not coming from her, I'm still totally disgusted by her in every way imaginable. GET REAL AVRIL. GROW UP.

Crispin Glover

One of the most subversive public figures in entertainment, Crispin Glover is surely nuts. He also seems to be quite intelligent, very interesting and incredibly bizarre.

In this clip Crispin answers questions (possibly posed by him) about art, society, his movie What Is It? and more.

The infamous Was-He-On-Acid?-David-Letterman clip.

The lesser-known follow up apperance.

CLOWNY CLOWN CLOWN

It took me about a month to actually get through this video and I'm not sure I'll ever watch it again. I find it very disturbing.

He's definitely part Simon de Beauvoir.

Thinking twice about that $400 handbag

"...affordable luxury is not looking so affordable — or sustainable — anymore."

As turned off as I am by the thought of spending obscene amounts of money on so-called luxury goods, I do feel bad for those who can't really afford to buy them, but feel the need to do so anyway, over and over again, just to fit in.

Not.

oh and firing 1,500-2,000 employees.

Too little, too late?

Sure seems like it.

In other EMI press release news, Giles Harris, head of Music and Brands, had this to say: "This new deal demonstrates perfectly how we are maximising the versatility of our music and videos through branded online incentivisation promotions.” Welcome to the internet EMI!

Scare tactics

This article is titled "Internet 'Brownouts' Feared by 2010 as User Traffic Soars". It was published on thestar.com at the end of November, 2007. I smell a conspiracy!

I strongly suspect that this 'study' is little more than prep work and wheel greasing for unnecessary increases in service costs. I'm convinced it was written because internet service providers are the gate keepers to the online world, which has already severely changed many industries, entertainment and retail being the largest. So now on top of online advertising, online sales and profiling target markets based their online behaviour, charging more money to connect to the internet is where it's at.
